Thank you so much for this! If there is one takeaway from this video it is that you should really try to give soft catches. I'm curious if you would get a different result if you added rope into the granite slab system, to more real-life lenght, while maintaining a "hard catch". I would guess the added dynamics would spread out the abrasion over a larger area. Thanks again and safe climbing to you! Also DON'T name your ropes! You'll get attached and heartbroken when it's time to retire it😢 I guess if I had to name it I would call it Colonel Senders

Whenever we climb anything overhanging and fall the rope gets pulled tight against the rock along the whole route. Pretty shocking there aren’t more accidents after seeing this 😮. I guess since it doesn’t move sideways and with a soft catch the risk is mitigated 🤷‍♂️ - spooky either way. Looking forward to that new rope core haha.

I'll go with "Shomi Th'Ropez". Excellent video and really confirmed my suspicions about sharp edges on rock. Beginner sport routes actually end on plateaus or lead over sharp corners quite often in my area and I've always found it a bit sketchy because beginners are less likely to avoid the worst with soft catches and such.

Nice video like always, important topic of real climbing problems, rope doesn´t take edges to well. I do not name my ropes, i have a dozen or more. And i own two 10,3mm ropes exactly because they just can take a little more, or i use two half ropes in half rope technique. thats the way to go trad in my opinion, reduces impact on single pieces, and gives redundancy on one rope being cut on a ledge. And finally you proved, why tube isn´t obsolete at all. Giving a real soft belay can safe a rope from braking too. I have a lot of burned sheaths but no sheath rupture yet, beside once hitting the rope with my foot on a gym wall, what killed the sheath also.

I think one of the best ways to mitigate sharp edges while climbing is to use two ropes in "half rope" configuration, rather than "twin" configuration, so one rope will have a tension point below the other, and will likely (hopefully) miss the sharp edge that cut the first rope. Either way, two ropes are still better than one for sure since two 8.9mm ropes give you 17.8mm of total rope diameter that you have to chew through to die. I currently use two Edelrid swift protect ropes (the one with aramid sewn into the sheath), and I'm interested to check out Mammut's cut resistant rope that you tested. I also do a lot of lead rope soloing so anything I can do to mitigate edges I'm all for!
